Bob Schmidt
Born 1945 in San Francisco
My paintings are large, typically 4 X 3 feet stretched canvas done in acrylic harmonious colors. I was always artistic as a child and as a young adult. Moved to Santa Rosa in 1988 and retired in 1999. It was then that I became serious about creating art. I started painting up close flowers on large canvases similar to the famous artist Georgia O’Keefe. I lost all my paintings in the 2017 Tubbs fire which totally destroyed our home. After this awful experience that still torments my subconscious I decided to change my artistic focus.
I now paint abstracts using an intuitive expressionism style. I am self taught using You Tube as my main reference. I have been influenced by many artists including Robert Burridge, Louise Fletcher, Karen Hale and mostly David Keller. I find that abstracts give me more freedom to be creative and release feelings and emotions from my mind on to my canvas.
Many times the fire experience finds it’s way into my paintings. I usually start a painting by selecting my pallet ( colors) and composition with a focal point. I start with this and “go with the flow”. What I see taking shape on the canvas gives me the direction of what I want this piece to become. This process can take me in many different directions as evident in my body of work.
